Power Guard Industrial Co., Ltd.

Framing the business success

To keep alive your best moments, you need the best quality photo frames that can enhance that sweet feeling towards the pictured subject(s). With such an important mission, photo frames have become a collection of gifts that can make artistic pieces. Equipped with sound knowledge in metal work and in silver/metal finishing, Power Guard Industrial Co., Ltd. is an experienced expert in this business that shouts both quality and creativity.

In 1990, Power Guard started off as a metal work manufacturer. Currently, the company employs 1,000 staff in its Shenzhen factory to run its major metal work and plastic work facilities.

In the early days, Power Guard concentrated on making all types of metal items, as well as the metal moulds for production. Until today, the company had accumulated as much as 10 years of experience and know-how, especially in metal stamping. In 1999, seeing the opportunities in the business, Power Guard’s management decided to make a major push into the photo frame market by taking advantage of its solid metal work knowledge. Since then, Power Guard has been metal stamping metallic photo frames in mass.

“Today, our product lines include photo frames with both metal and wooden structures, but our focus is still on stamped metallic photo frames,” added Raymond Lam, Power Guard’s marketing executive.

As per Power Guard’s catalogue, selection of the company’s lines includes “Super Mini” Frames of 4X5 cm in size, to large frames of 25X30cm. They are made in different finishes ranging from silver plated & all kinds of antique colors, to most of the popular finishes on the market. The company also boasts a wide selection of more than 500 designs.

Other than pure metallic frames, the company has also been developing other techniques such as fill-in plastic for turning out new variations.

Power Guard has now firmly rooted itself in the metal photo frame market after 5 to 6 years of development and re-consolidation. At the moment, the company works mostly with buyers from North America and Europe. Quite contrary to the common view that the US market has a greater appetite for gift items, business from Europe is the overwhelming majority for Power Guard. Despite the fact that the Europeans are the ones who supply the finest photo frames in the world, particularly those golden or silver-lining frames, some agents in European market turn to external imports occasionally to seek variation in styles so as to complement their local sources, and to fulfill the wide spectrum of popular demand. Asian suppliers are part of their alternative importing sources.

In terms of product interest, the European and the North American buyers demonstrate distinctively different preferences. American buyers usually place their emphasis on cost effectiveness when sourcing for photo frame products, while European buyers look more at design diversities. For example, French and U.K. buyers tend to focus more on classical designs, while buyers from Turkey would prefer more fancy styles.

To meet different tastes and demands, Power Guard has been working out new designs by adding twists on its most popular lines, as some of the customers request new variations on existing products. Also there are other colours available including silver, gold, some types of bronze, etc.

In turning out a photo frame model, its major cost is usually determined by the width of the frame. The formula is simple: The wider the width, the higher would be the cost as more material is needed. In addition, Power Guard also emphasises high quality on the frame’s back cover materials, so the company has adopted fine black velvet.

Other than the regular models, Power Guard also refits existing frame models with new elements. One of such ideas is a clock within a frame. The frame-clock is meant to be a clock staying on the tabletop, and as a way to add extra value to Power Guard’s frame products. The item does manage to draw attention from Power Guard’s existing buyers. Apart from frame-clocks, the photo frame-album is also a unique design and innovation of the company to provide new surprise for the market.

At the same time, Power Guard also keeps on with its mini photo frame lines, which are actually the company’s ‘foundation’ series when they first engaged in making photo frames. Although these are in fact old models, they are still favoured by certain groups of clients. Clients from European countries, like Germany in particular, are keen to buy mini frames for displaying pictures of family members or love ones on top of their fire places.

In recent months, Power Guard’s design team has also been trying out a new frame line which combines a metal frame with wooden profile. However, Raymond Lam conceded that the product is still in the early stage of development. He revealed that the company needs to embed a metal frame into a wooden base in making this model. This implies a doubling of production effort as it is the same as doing a combination of two frames.

Power Guard will continue to follow its effective approach of twisting out new tricks on existing popular designs in the foreseeable future. Concurrently, the company has also been working on custom design provided by its clients, such as photo frames with religion or festive insignias. These designs are usually custom-built and for sale only under exclusive agreements with the holders of the original licenses.

To further consolidate the company’s position in the market, Power Guard vows to pursue developing more new models as based on the existing lines, as they can cover even more new markets in the process. In order to maintain its competitive edge, the company will continue improving designs on existing products to deal with a diverse market. Raymond Lam emphasied that Power Guard will never compromise on quality, while keeping on standing out from the crowd.
