Travel Tips

When to visit- Arts and Events

During the summer months, the huge open-air marble theatre at the foot of the Acropolis hosts a series of musical, dance and theatrical performances. Meanwhile, magnificent classical Greek plays are the focal point of Athens' cultural scene.

Dining

Seasonal salads, luscious fresh fruits and olives are widely available in Athens in summer; while delicious Greek desserts like Kataifi (a mixture of nuts, wheat and honey) are served in winter.

Tavernas, situated at the narrow and winding streets at the foot of the Acropolis, serve fresh fish and roasted meat while traditional Greek music is played live in the background. There are also other restaurants offering cuisines from around the world.

Tipping Advice

In Athens, bills in restaurants are usually subject to 15% service charge, though it is normal to leave a tip of up to 10% for the waiters. Visitors should tip porters and other service workers in proportion to the level of services provided.

Transportation

Athens is accessible by air, and conveniently linked to other parts of Greece by road and rail.

Arriving by Air

There are regular international and domestic flights servicing the Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport.
