Dubai

Orientation

Dubai is the premier city of the Middle East. Most visitors to the region would stopover at Dubai to browse the shops and enjoy the city's positive vibes. As the city is divided by a long creek, visitors should take the water taxis to orientate themselves and to adore the modern and palatial architecture. Everything is shinny and new in Dubai, especially the newest ranges of gadgets and designer wear available at the traditional markets, which attract thousands of visitors each year.

Travel Tips

Arts and Events

A host of Muslim Festivals are held in Dubai each year, including Ramadan, the six-week religious fast which ends with the Eid al-Fitr festival. The Islamic New Year and Prophet's Birthday are two other main celebrations.

Dining

Visitors are urged to try the traditional Middle-Eastern foods, including fuul, made from broad beans with lemon juice, garlic and spices; and falafel, fried chick pea paste and lamb or chicken served in pita bread, which are readily served at most local restaurants. A mix of highly exotic and colourful fruits is also available from the fresh produce stalls at the markets. Other international cuisines, like pizzas, pasta, steak, salads and even fast-food are available in Dubai.

Tipping Advice

Although tipping is not common in Dubai, the waiters always appreciate it as their salaries are low.

Transportation

Travelling by air to Dubai is the most convenient, though other transports, like rail, are available. Although the road network in Dubai is reasonable, the national road network is inconsistent.

Arriving by Air

Dubai International Airport serves Dubai with both international and domestic services.

Getting Around Dubai

The bus services, minibuses and taxis are good means of getting around Dubai, but the public transport system beyond the city is unreliable. Car hiring rates are not too expensive, and the condition of roads in the city is generally good. However, road rules are not always observed. Also, visitors should keep watch of wandering camels when driving.
